If you are an emetophobia sufferer, you probably think that you will always feel this way. You may have tried CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and even tried hypnotherapy without success. Alternatively you may have been suffering in silence, keeping the phobia a secret even from those close to you. Emetophobia, also known as vomit phobia, is one of the most severe phobias that anyone could suffer from. The reason it effects people so profoundly is because the phobia focuses on something that is highly unpredictable, and impossible to be completely in control of.
Allow me to explain what I mean. If you happen to suffer with a fear of flying, whilst it is a nuisance and restricts your options, it is possible to control it’s effects simply by………..not flying! Unfortunately for the emetophobia sufferer, it is impossible to be completely sure that someone else won’t be sick or that you won’t be sick. This leads to a kind of obsessive thinking where the sufferer is constantly on guard and evaluating all sorts of things… their own health, what they are eating, other peoples’ health, illness epidemics, worry about travelling (travel sickness) and countless other factors. Many emetophobia sufferers spend a huge amount of time and energy considering such things and evaluating how to minimise the risk of sickness. This is extremely stressful but never results in true peace of mind because they can never know with absolute certainty that they are safe. Also, over time it can often lead to developing other fears and phobias.
Okay, that’s the bad news out of the way. Now for the good news. It is usually possible to completely resolve the problem using a very specific and specialised treatment approach called the Thrive Programme. The Thrive Programe doesn’t involve hypnosis or related trance techniques. It is a very thorough and structured psychological training programme that allows the emetophobia sufferer to fully understand the mechanisms underlying the problem and how to correct them. This is done over a short course of weekly sessions (8 on average) and clients find it tremendously empowering and liberating.
